1. Nature of AI-Generated Research Results
Legal Exception uses artificial intelligence to match your queries to a curated knowledge base of US legal exceptions, exemptions, and safe harbors. AI-generated results carry the following inherent limitations:
- Accuracy: Results may be incomplete, inaccurate, or inapplicable to your specific facts, jurisdiction, or circumstances. The law changes frequently; the knowledge base may not reflect the most recent statutory or regulatory amendments.
- Hallucination risk: Although Legal Exception is designed to return a "no match" response rather than generating speculative answers, AI systems can produce errors. All results must be independently verified at primary sources.
- Scope: The knowledge base covers selected areas of US federal law and selected state law provisions. It does not cover all jurisdictions, all subject-matter areas, or all exceptions that may exist within a covered area.
2. Required Independent Verification
Before using any result from Legal Exception in any of the following contexts, you must independently verify the result at authoritative primary sources (official statutory text, the Code of Federal Regulations, official case reporters, or equivalent):
- Any legal filing, brief, motion, or court document
- Any client communication, opinion letter, or legal memorandum
- Any compliance decision or advice to a business or individual
- Any publication, continuing legal education material, or formal legal analysis
Reliance on unverified AI-generated research in legal filings has resulted in court sanctions, attorney discipline, and substantial harm to clients. See our blog post on AI citation sanctions and FRCP 11 obligations for AI-assisted filings.
3. No Attorney–Client Relationship
The use of Legal Exception — including submitting queries, reading results, or contacting Foculoom support — does not create an attorney–client relationship, a lawyer–client relationship, or any other professional relationship. Foculoom LLC is not a law firm and does not employ attorneys acting in a professional legal capacity toward users of this product.
4. No Endorsement of Specific Legal Positions
The inclusion of a legal exception or exemption in the Legal Exception knowledge base does not constitute an endorsement by Foculoom that the exception applies in any particular case, nor an opinion that reliance on that exception is appropriate, lawful, or advisable in your circumstances. Legal exceptions often turn on highly fact-specific analyses that a research tool cannot perform.
5. AI Disclosure
Legal Exception uses Apple's on-device machine learning frameworks (FoundationModels) and a curated knowledge base to generate responses. AI is involved in matching, summarizing, and presenting legal exception information. Results are generated programmatically and are not reviewed by an attorney before being presented to you.
6. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Foculoom LLC disclaims all liability for damages arising from your use of, or reliance on, Legal Exception results, including but not limited to damages arising from legal proceedings in which AI-generated research was used without independent verification. See the full Terms of Use for the complete limitation of liability.
